Rocco's Tavern

A sports bar is empty without a game. We found what fills it on a Tuesday

Rocco's Tavern is packed on game days and half empty in between. We went looking for reasons to come in that have nothing to do with sports.

The situation

The problem every sports bar has

A sports bar lives by a schedule its owner doesn't write. Big game on, the room is packed and the kitchen can't keep up. No game, and it's the same screens, the same wings, the same staff on shift, and half the tables are empty.

Rocco's Tavern is an Italian sports bar that three guys from Staten Island and one local opened in 2000. New York pizza, wings with nine sauces, a double happy hour, screens on every wall, four locations across the city. A place with character, and the same problem as everyone else: between games there is no reason to come in.

The question

What we looked for

Every sports bar sells the broadcast. But you can watch the broadcast at home, for free, with the same beer. People go to a bar for what's around the screen, so that's what we had to show.

We split the content into food, happy hour, atmosphere, staff and humor, and tested each one with a single question: does it give someone a reason to come on a day when nothing is on?

Reasons to come on a Tuesday

Food that makes you hungry and the feeling of a place where it's good to sit. No screens, no score, no game schedule.

The answer

What worked had no sports in it

On a regular Tuesday, sports don't bring people in. Food that makes you hungry does, and so does the feeling of a place where it's good to sit. It sounds obvious, but almost no sports bar shows itself this way. They film the screens, the score and the game schedule, and compete with what people get at home for free.

  • Food

Not a photo of a pizza but footage that makes you hungry: New York pizza, wings with nine sauces, texture, close-ups. Food is the one thing you can't get at home by turning on the game.

  • Atmosphere

Videos that carry the feeling of the night, not the event. A full room, noise, light, people having a good time. You watch it and want to be there tonight, not on Saturday when the big game is on.

  • Happy hour and staff

Happy hour is a ready reason to stop by after work on any weekday. Staff humor builds recognition: you watch a reel with the bartender, walk in, and there he is behind the bar.

The VIP room

Selling the room that doesn't sell itself

Rocco's has a VIP room downstairs and a separate area in the main room. Spaces like that don't sell themselves. People see the price and can't tell what they're paying for: same screens, same menu, same game.

We showed the difference through the feeling instead of the description. Nobody bumping into you, your own group, your own table, a different kind of night. Now Rocco's has something the sports bars next door don't: a format people will pay more for, because they understand what they're buying.

The results

What the numbers showed

The number that matters most is the last one. The content didn't circle inside its own audience, it reached new people every day. Followers already know you. Revenue comes from the people who haven't been in yet.

Why it matters

If your business depends on someone else's schedule, a sports calendar, a season, the holidays, you have a choice. Accept the swings, or create reasons to come on all the other days.

Discounts don't do it. A discount brings people in once and teaches them to wait for the next one. What works is making someone want to be at your place: the food, familiar faces, the right feeling for the night.

And check who your account is working for. If most of your views come from followers, you're talking to people who would come anyway. Growth starts where people who don't know you yet are watching.
